  • General note

The library also holds a colour lithograph print of this image that is a proof before letters were added, in the Dixson Galleries collection (DG V*/Ships/32).
In the lithograph the Sea Horse is depicted flying a white flag with two bees. The Sea Horse (or Seahorse) was owned by Benjamin Boyd. According to the book, Benjamin Boyd in Australia (1842-1849)... by H. P. Wellings, Benjamin Boyd had a flag with a white ground and two honey-bees depicted in blue. The two honey-bees represented the initial letters of his name and suggested the industry of the honey-bee. The flag was used to distinguish ownership of a vessel.
