  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Leumane, tenor, played Faust in an 1887 production at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne. Nellie Stewart was the Marguerite and Signor Frederici [aka Federici, real name Frederick Baker], an English baritone, was the Mephistopheles. Frederici always carried nitro-glycerine pills for heart disease. At the end of the opera as Faust and Mephistopheles decended to Hell (a trapdoor), the audience did not realise that Frederici had died. (The newspaper does not explain why the audience did not miss his re-appearance for the curtain calls.)
