Keith B. Saunders, Aboriginal boxer, was born into one of only three indigenous families living in South Cardiff, near Newcastle, in 1934. His mother took him and his siblings to live in Redfern in the early 1940s. Chippendale gymnasium owner, Billy McConnell, spotted the thirteen-year-old Keith's boxing potential, and guided his early career.

In 1950 Saunders made the New South Wales State boxing finals. Two years later he had his first professional fight at the Sydney Stadium. In 1959 Australian Ring magazine rated Saunders the 7th best welterweight fighter in Australia.

Saunders retired prematurely from boxing with brain damage in 1966. He made two comebacks in 1968 and 1970 before finally retiring. He and his wife Jan and their children moved to Green Valley in Sydney's western suburbs in 1966.

Keith Saunders died in November 2003.
