  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    In August 1806, Mary Putland and her husband Lieutenant John Putland, RN arrived in Sydney with her father, William Bligh when he took up the position of Governor of New South Wales. John Putland died on 4 January 1808, and on 8 May 1810 Mary married Lieutenant-Governor Maurice O'Connell. The couple remained in Sydney until 1814 when they accompanied the 73rd Regiment to India, eventually returning to Sydney in 1838. Following the death of Sir Maurice O'Connell in 1848, Lady O'Connell lived in Paris for some years and then returned to England.     The miniature was almost certainly painted in early 1805 in England before the departure of Mary Putland to New South Wales in November 1805. -- Curator's notes, State Library of NSW, Dec 2003, ML 1044/03
