  • General note

Purchased from a descendant of William Bligh.

The drawings appear to be part of a larger commission of John Lewin watercolours ordered by Governor Bligh in late 1807. A number of other drawings by Lewin from late 1807 (October, November and December) with a Bligh provenance have survived. For instance the Art Gallery of NSW's "Variegated Lizard of New South Wales" is dated 3 December 1807 (the same date as "Coal River - Hunter River"), while the "Southern Leaf Tailed Gecko" (Art Gallery of South Australia) is dated 3 November 1807.
