    This painting is based on a print of the ship, "View of the Lady Nelson in the Thames ..." engraved by S.I. Neele reproduced on p.1 in: "The Narrative of a Voyage of Discovery, performed in His Majesty's Vessel the Lady Nelson, of sixty tons burthen, with sliding keels, in the years 1800, 1801, and 1802, to New South Wales" by James Grant. London: Printed by C. Roworth, Bell Yard, Fleet Street, for T. Egerton, Military Library, Whitehall, 1803. (Dixson Reading Room Q80/17 & Q80/18)
    The print and this painting differ in small details.
    A wood engraving of this painting was published in "The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser", 29 December 1888, p.1345. The painting was then described as being in the possession of Captain Hector, of the Peninsular and Oriental steamship Britannia.

[i.e. Royal Navy] / Sailed from England March 18th and entered Port Jackson Decr. 16th 1800. / In this vessel Lieu. Murray R.N. discovered and entered / Port Phillip, February 1802"
