The Ngunnagan Club was formed in 1947 by four post-war migrants, who were university students in Sydney. It was a voluntary non-political, non-profit group that promoted cultural and social activities for young adults. Its name was taken from an Aboriginal word meaning 'friendly meeting place'. The Club originally catered for young refugees from Nazi Germany and Central Europe. Within a decade it had embraced increasing numbers of Anglo-Celtic Australians and for the rest of its history attracted members regardless of nationality, politics or religion.

In the 1950s the Club joined the Associated Youth Committee of the National Fitness Council of N.S.W. and its successor bodies, as well as the Youth Hostels Association of N.S.W.. The Club's outdoor activities generated interest in environmental issues and led to it joining the Nature Conservation Council of N.S.W.. The Club was also affiliated to the Clubs and Societies on Campus Committee of the University of N.S.W. Students' Union and to the International Friendship League.

Viennese-born Heinz Harant (1919-1992) was the Club's co-founder and longtime Honorary Secretary. He had emigrated to Australia in September 1939. He graduated in Electrical Engineering (Hons) in 1955 from the University of N.S.W., and maintained a lifelong association with his alma mater through membership of various committees.

The Ngunnagan Club folded in the late 1990s, but its name is perpetuated through the Ngunnagan Scholarship, established as a permanent endowment within the University of N.S.W. Foundation to assist students from country high schools in their first year at the University.
