The watercolour shows fashionably dressed spectators who display little interest as a fieldsman desperately chases the ball to the boundry during a match at Richmond. Cricket began in Melbourne in 1838 with the formation of the Melbourne Cricket Club. Reference: 'Cricket in Australia: the Summer Game', Celbrating 100 years of the Mitchell Library.
