    Sir Charles Brooke, 1829-1917 was born Charles Johnson. He left England in 1852 to serve under his uncle Sir James Brooke, who was Rajah of Sarawak. When Sir James returned to England in 1863, Charles who assumed the name of Brooke, virtually became Acting-Rajah and on Sir James's death in 1868, formally succeeded him. He continued to govern as rajah until his death in 1917
