  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur Clyde Giles, born in Glebe, Sydney was a steward on the New Zealand passenger ship Maunganui, which at the outbreak of war was converted to a troopship, and continued working on this and other troopships until May 1915. He enlisted in the A.I.F. at the age of 28 on 10 June 1915, stating his occupation as boundary rider, and served with the 1st Battalion, 15th Reinforcement in Egypt before embarking for France 28 Mar. 1916. He attended the School of Instruction at Etaples 3 Aug. 1916, was wounded in action in France 18 Aug. 1916, hospitalised in England, wounded again 4 Oct. 1917 and returned to Australia in May 1919. Clyde Giles later enlisted in the Australian Military Forces in Feb. 1942 but was discharged because of illness.
    His brother John Albert Giles also served in the A.I.F., with the 53rd Battalion, 14th Brigade

    Letters, 9 May 1914-13 May 1919, mainly from Clyde Giles to his father James Clark Giles, describing work and experiences on board the Maunganui, May-Oct. 1914, training at Liverpool, N.S.W., June-Aug. 1915, service in Egypt, Nov. 1915-Mar. 1916, and in France - April 1916-Nov. 1918 with spells in England for treatment of wounds, Aug.-Oct. 1916, Oct. 1917-April 1918.
