Signaller James Purser Irwin, warehouseman of Harkway, Victoria enlisted 20 Jan. 1916 aged 20 years and embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A33 Ayrshire, 3 July 1916. He served with the 21st Battalion in France, was hospitalised with trench fever, June 1917 and invalided to Australia on HT Pakeha 22 Oct. 1917 - Scope and ContentDescribes voyage to England on the troopship Ayreshire, training at Salisbury Plains, service in France, Nov. 1916-1917, experiences in hospitals in France and England, return voyage to Melbourne on the Pakeha
