    Philip Ernest Owen, a marine steward of Penshurst, Sydney, New South Wales was born in Balmain, Sydney and enlisted at the show ground camp in Dec. 1916 aged 29. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A68 Anchises, 24 Jan. 1917 and in July 1917 transferred from 1st Pioneer Battalion, 9th Reinforcement to the 17th Infantry Battalion. He was invalided from France to England Apr. 1918 with gas poisoning and was accidently injured in a dugout in Belgium, Aug. 1918. He returned to Australia on HT Ceramic, Jan. 1919
