  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Founded by James Norton (1795-1862), solicitor, in Sydney from 1819-1862. The firm became Norton and Barker in 1826, Norton, Son & Barker in 1848, on the death of James Norton, Norton & Barker again, reverting to James Norton on Barker's retirement. In 1879 Robert Smith joined to make it Norton & Smith. For a few years it was Norton, Smith, Westgarth & Sanders but finally became in 1890 Norton, Smith & Co.

    The records of Norton Smith & Co. comprise mainly indexes and registers, together with maps and plans. Entries date back to the early days of James Norton's work as a solicitor in Sydney. Series include:
