    George Underwood Fraser Alley, a works foreman of Perth, Western Australia was born in Orange, New South Wales. He was a veteran of the South African campaign. He enlisted in Perth aged 35 years and embarked from Fremantle for Egypt on HMAT A38 Ulysses, 2 Nov. 1915. He served in the 11th Battalion, 11th Reinforcement, 3rd Brigade as a sergeant in Egypt and France and returned to Australia on the hospital ship Kanowna. He died in Sydney, 1919 of illnesses contracted during the war
  • Scope and Content
    Includes letters from Alley to his mother while at sea and in France, describing trench warfare and bombardments and the French countryside, a telegram to his mother in North Sydney advising of his admission to 24th General Hospital, Etaples with gunshot wounds, letters to his mother from Norfolk War and Harefield Park hospitals. Also includes telegrams advising of his return to Australia on hospital ship Kanowna 24 Feb. 1917, his admission, critically ill with pneumonic influenza to Randwick Military Hospital and his death certificate, 8 Apr. 1919.
