  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Lieutenant-Colonel William Cosmo Trevor commanded the 2nd Battalion 14th Regiment in the New Zealand War of 1864-66. In October 1866 the head-quarters of the 2nd battalion, under Lieutenant-Colonel Trevor, embarked for Melbourne. Three companies embarked for Hobart and two companies to Adelaide. In March 1869 a detachment left for Sydney. On the 19th March, 1870, the battalion, under command of Lieutenant-Colonel Trevor, left Melbourne in the ship `Walmer Castle' for England.

    This collection of photographs was removed from the Mitchell Library's Small Pictures File (a self-indexing file accessible in the Library's reading room) in 1990 for preservation reasons.
    Each photograph was mounted on a separate sheet with a typescript note "From an album, on the last page of which, in the same hand as the titles of the photographs, was: Colonel Trevor 14th Regiment, November 10th 1869"
    Photographers include: Samuel Clifford (nos. 19,21,22,30) identified from Tasamanian Images database, State Library of Tasmania, July 2002 and Tasmanian scenes / S. Clifford photographer (Mitchell Library PXA 503). The wide angle panoramic views ca. 1865, in the Sydney series, were probably taken by Freeman Brothers or Victor Prout (identified from other Freeman Bros. & Prout panoramas in the Pictures Collection, Mitchell Library). Nos. 76,79 & 94 attributed to John Degotardi, 287 George St., Sydney from: Photograph album : Sydney, Newcastle and Bathurst views (Mitchell Library PXB 258)
