- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
According to J. F. Archibald's introductory paragraph, this manuscript was found in an abandoned hut on the Western Plains of New South Wales at the end of the 19th century. The anonymous author apparently gave up his work as a boundary rider to go to the war in South Africa. J. F. Archibald was editor of the Bulletin from 1886 to 1903. 'A Boundary Rider' was probably published in the Bulletin early in the 20th century. - Scope and ContentThe manuscript describes the solitary and monotonous life of a boundary rider in western New South Wales at the end of the 19th century. It comprises seven foolscap pages written in ink, endorsed on the last page in blue pencil with the title and dated 1898. There are some editorial marks that are not in the author's hand. On a separate leaf, the editorial introduction states that "It tells of the loneliness of the plains as experienced by one unaccustomed to such solitude. With grim humour he details an average day of which three hundred & sixty-five made up his uneventful year."
