  Pierre Nuyts shared a studio in Mort’s Buildings, 38 Pitt Street with Martens in the early 1850s before leaving for Batavia and Singapore, SMH, 30 May 1854, p.2, col. 6 and Bell’s Life …, 3 June 1854, pg.3, col.1 reported on the studio.

  “In February 1856 Martens sent the portrait to his brother Henry `The portrait is by Mr Nuyts a Belgian artists who painted with me for some time and has now gone to Batavia.
