  • General note

These items represent the majority of original artworks by Autralian children's book illustrators, plus some associated material, formerly incorporated in the Museum of Australian Childhood. The Museum began in 1983 as a privately funded operation instigated by John Reid, Chairman, James Hardie Industries Limited, located at James Hardie's head office, the Grace Building, York Street, Sydney. Officially known as the Thyne Reid Australian Childrens Collection, printed books, board games, toys and ephemera were included as well as original artworks.

New acquisitions were funded by The Thyne Reid Trust. In 1988 the Collection was presented to the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and relocated at Juniper Hall, Paddington. The Collection continued to grow with further donations and purchases. In 1993 the Museum of Australian Childhood was relocated once again at the Merchant's House, 43 George Street (leased by the National Trust from the Sydney Cove Authority) but closed in 1996 prior to dispersal of its collections.

The State Library of NSW acquired most of the printed books, ephemera and artworks; the Powerhouse Museum a selection of toys; the National Trust retained a small number of items, with others to be relocated. -- August 1997
