  • General note

This portrait has been identified by the donor as being Sarah Osborne, who arrived in Australia from Ireland in 1829 with her husband Henry: see Australian Dictionary of Biography vol. 2.
As the portrait appears to show Sarah in mourning - the letter she holds and its envelope are rimmed in black - it could be speculated that the portrait was painted in 1859, the year of the death of her husband.
