- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
The Mercury Theatre was formed in Sydney in 1946 by Sydney John Kay and Peter Finch. They began by presenting 3 classic European one-act plays. In 1947 Kay designed a folding stage to fit on a truck and the Mercury Mobile Players took classic comedy to audiences in factories, schools, hospitals and public halls. In 1948 Laurence Olivier and Vivien leigh saw Finch in a Moliere play at O'Briens Glass factory. The Mercury theatre ceased operations in 1949 when Finch went to London. Kay revived the theatre in 1952 but was forced to close down in late 1953 owing to financial problems. - Scope and ContentTheatre programs, photographs and newscuttings.
