  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Dane Thwaites, poet, editor and publisher was born in 1950 at Inverell, NSW. He was educated at the University of New England, graduating in 1971. He was the recipient of a young writer's Literature Board Grant in 1986 and a Literature Fund Fellowship in 1996. He shared the Mattara Prize for Poetry (now called the Newcastle Prize) in 1987, and won the Premier's Poetry Award, Brisbane Writer's Festival in 1996.
    Thwaites' poetry has appeared in numerous Australian literary journals, including 'Meanjin', 'New Poetry', 'Overland', 'Poetry Australia' and 'Westerly'. Two collections of his poetry have been published: 'Winter Light' (1983) and 'South China' (1993).
    Thwaites founded 'Compass', a poetry magazine in 1977, co-editing twelve issues from 1977 to 1982. He has also edited the poetry magazines 'Helix' and 'Phoenix Review'. In 1983 he established Black Lightning Press, a small publishing venture and as its editor and manager published a series of eight poetry books by Australian poets between 1983 and 1989.
    In 1993 Thwaites founded the poetry magazine 'Hobo', editing the first sixteen issues from 1993 to 1998. A particular feature of the magazine was its English language haiku section.
