    Jane Tompson (Armytage nee Morris) was the second wife of emancipist Charles Tompson, Snr. whom she married on the 25th Aug.1822. They settled at Tompson's property at Clydesdale.

  • General note

    Mrs Tompson's dress was once a rich blue, but the indigo pigment has faded to a light green.
    Backing sheet now destroyed had the inscription `This portrait was taken at the age of 42 1/2 years in January 1837'.
    Formerly thought to be the portrait of the wife of Charles Thompson the poet. See notes at PXn 142 establishing the sitter to be the stepmother of the poet.
    This portrait forms a pair with `Chs Tompson Esqr. Clydesdale' at DG P2/55
