    Mungo Ballardie MacCallum (1913-1999), was the grandson of scholar Sir Mungo William MacCallum (1854-1942), the son of Mungo Lorenz MacCallum (1884-1934) and the father of Mungo Wentworth MacCallum (born 1941).

    Mungo Ballardie MacCallum was a journalist, radio and television broadcaster, film and arts critic, poet and playwright. He was born in Point Piper Sydney, educated at the Sydney Grammar School and studied Arts at the University of Sydney. His journalistic career began as a cadet at the Sydney Morning Herald, while he was still studying at university. When World War II broke out in 1939, he enlisted and edited the army education journal, SALT.

    Mungo Ballardie MacCallum worked at the Australian Broadcasting Commission as a journalist, writer and producer for radio. He was one of the pioneers of Australian television and produced the ABC’s first television broadcast in 1956. He won an Australian Writer’s Guild Award for his radio program ‘Stone Bloody Henge’ in 1972 and his radio play ‘Five Days’ was entered for the Italia Prize in 1966. He published two novels, ‘Voyage of Love’ and ‘Son of Mars’, an autobiography ‘Plankton’s Luck’ and wrote documentary film scripts and poetry. He was also a well-known contributor to journals and newspapers. He married his second wife Polly in 1972. His first wife was Diana Wentworth, with whom he had a son Mungo Wentworth MacCallum, who became a well-known political journalist.
