  • General note

Affixed to the back of mount No.1 is a handwritten note regarding provenance that applies to drawings no. 1 to 30, "This little collection of / most valuable Australian, / &c. water-col. & pencil drawings, / were taken by me from a / serap. book Album made of by / the Revd. Archdeacon Scott of / Whitfield Rectory, 7 m. N.N.E. / from Alston & 10 m. S.W. from Hexham, / Northumberland, between c. 1833 / & 1840 / A.W. Fuller / 15 Octr. 1949". The album from which the drawings were removed is located at PXA 42.
On the reverse of each item (excepting Nos. 29-30) are pencil notations that are signed by "A.W.F. Fuller 5 Octr. 1949"
No.1 although the reverse notes that this drawing is by J. Lycett, the style is very similar to a watercolour drawing of St Philip's Church, titled "The front of Sydney Church New South Wales 1809" that was previously attributed to J.W. Lewin but a later preservation treatment revealed that it was signed by G.W. Evans (see PXD 388 Vol.1 f.7 Mitchell Library).
Nos. 1 to 4. It has been suggested that Bigge may have commissioned these works from J. Lycett, although it is just as likely to have been Scott himself as other drawings in the collection, such as the Rodius's or the images of the Success relate to his later career in NSW -- Reference: First views of Australia 1788-1825 : a history of early Sydney / Tim McCormick ... [et al.] ; foreword by Bernard Smith. Chippendale, N.S.W. : David Ell Press in association with Longueville Publications, 1987
No. 5 Convict Barracks Sydney, although unsigned, is attributed to George William Evans, after comparison with other signed works by him.
    Nos. 8, 14, and 17 bear watermark, "J. Whatman / Turkey Mill / 1830"
    No.10 bears watermark, "J. Whatman ..."
Nos. 14 to 18. Views of the Sunda Straits. The handwritting appears to be the same as that of the watercolour view No.8, "H.M.S. Success hove down to the Couizer"
No.23 At the lower right hand side is a signature that is difficult to discern.
Nos. 23-24. Possibly views of New South Head road. Drawn of cards with border of embossed designs comprising riding scenes and raised text along lower edge, "Westwood London".
No.27 has additional title information in pencil.
No.31 appears to be a copy of a drawing in T.L. Mitchell's "Three Expeditions into the interior of Eastern Australia" 1830, Vol.1, plate 21, p.320
No.33 The inscription is repeated in a different hand at the upper left-hand side on the reverse of the image with the addition of, "The Native shelter look more like S. Aust."
No.34 Pasted to drawing is a description of "King Bongaree" from Robert Burford's printed key to his panorama of Sydney, "Description of a view of the town of Sydney ... now exhibiting in the Panorama, Leicester Square, London", of 1829 p.9
No.35 Attached to the reverse of the Library mount is a piece of paper with handwritten text, "Australian / Bush Camp. / Original Pen & Ink Sketch / By / Miss Evelyn Whiting / 1887"
Nos. 36, 46, and 47 consist of a double paged sheet with two portraits.
Nos. 36 to 46 are most likely proofs for W. Baker's, "Heads of the People", 1847-1848 (see E. Buscombe, "Artists in early Australia and their portraits : a guide to the portrait painters of early Australia with special reference to colonial New South Wales ..." Sydney : Eureka Research, 1979, pp. 228-233 for publication details)

    Exhibitions - Art Gallery of W.A. Sequintenary, 1979 (Nos. 8-9) ; Conservatorium, 1976 (No. 20)
CATALOGUING NOTE: Nos. 10-13. James Hammond, Acting State Librarian (W.A.) in 1963 wrote that the drawings were almost identical with some wash drawings in the W.A. Art Gallery which were purchased by Dr Battye from Francis Edwards in 1924 and were said to have been acquired from a descendant of Sir James Stirling and to have been painted in 1829 by an unknown artist. The writing appears the same. (see ML corrsepondence 411/1963)
    Digital order no:Album ID : 823417
