  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Anderson Cawthorne, born in London in 1825, was a sketcher, watercolourist, author, and schoolmaster. He emigrated to South Australia with his parents on board the Amelia in 1841. For income, Cawthorne opened a school in Currie Street Adelaide and in 1852 became headmaster of Pulteney Grammar School. In 1855 he opened his own Victoria Square Academy which exhibited over 200 of his sketches. -- Reference: Dictionary of Australian artists / Joan Kerr, editor.
