  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Oswald Walters Brierly, marine painter to Queen Victoria and the Royal Yacht Squadron, was born in Chester in 1817. He studied art and naval architecture in London before travelling to Australia in 1842 aboard the Wanderer with Benjamin Boyd. Brierly managed Boyd's whaling and pastoral business, based in Twofold Bay, until its collapse in 1848. Subsequently, Brierly travelled on various navigational voyages (including the H.M.S. Rattlesnake and H.M.S. Maeander), and as a war artist of naval operations during the Crimean War. He was also offical artist to the Duke of Edinburgh during his voyages on the H.M.S. Galatea
This collection is significant for its depiction of Australian Aboriginal and Pacific Islander maritime technologies, the nineteenth century whaling industry in Australia, settlement of Twofold Bay, and representations of the various flora and fauna encountered during explorations of the South Pacific -- Reference: Australian Dictionary of Biography. Vol.3, 1851-1890. Carlton, Vic.: Melbourne University Press, 1969
