• ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
  
  The relationship between the two subjects in this rather flamboyant example of colonial portraiture was quite complicated. Thomas Chapman, a Sydney draper, is here depicted with his nephew-by-marriage Robert Cooper, aged 10. After Chapman's wife died, he married Robert's widowed mother in 1851 and became his step-father.
