    This portrait passed to Sarah Scarvell's daughter, Jessie Cape. At her death in 1963 it passed to Jessie's niece, from whom the Library acquired it in 2004.

    Eight portraits by Richard Noble of the Scarvell family have been documented - see Eve Buscombe, Artists in early Australia and their portraits, Eureka Research, 1978. Mary Lang's "Home was here" also discusses the paintings on pages 180-182 and p. 214. The paintings are reproduced in black & white in both these books.
