The work is untitled, undated, and unsigned.
The attribution, title, and date derives from Dunlop's great nephew, John Service.
John Service, in his "Thir Notandums" (MLMSS locn no. B434 p.210b), gives the date of the portrait as 1843, and claims it was painted in Parramatta. An English (Paul Stabler, Sunderland) cabinet print of this portrait is also tipped into "Thir Notandums".
The donor of this portrait was the grand-nephew of Jane Dunlop
