The opera 'Don John of Austria' by Isaac Nathan was first produced under the composer's direction at Sydney's Royal Victoria Theatre on 3 May 1847, where it enjoyed a successful run of six performances. It is generally considered to be the first opera composed and produced in Australia. - Scope and ContentThe opera is in three acts and is here scored for 5 solo voices, chorus (SSATBB) and piano. This manuscript is a fair copy and is the only known source of the complete work. It was copied by a single hand, except for some alterations and additions (some in ink and others in pencil) by at least two additional hands, one of which was possibly the composer himself. There are indications that the manuscript was used extensively. The manuscript may have been prepared for Isaac Nathan's use as conductor, or possibly, for the projected printed edition of the complete vocal score, of which the Overture and four songs are known to have been published. The pencilled signature of Temple Nathan appears on the first page.
The libretto is by Jacob Levi Montefiore (1819-1885), based on Casimir Delavigne's 'Don Juan d'Autriche'. - Copying ConditionsOut of copyright: Work performed during lifetime of creator; copyright expired in 1914 (life of creator plus 50 years)
