    John West was involved in broadcast radio before the war. From 1942-1945 he served in the RAAF where he was involved in RAAF Radio "The Voice of the Islands", based in Milne Bay, Papua New Guinea. In the post war period he became a household name on ABC Radio where he was known as "The Showman"
