    Alfred Harold (Harry) Hodge, teacher and historian, was born at Hill End, N.S.W., in 1904, the fifth of nine children to Walter Frederick Hodge, a grazier, and Alice Amy, nee Carver. As a primary school teacher in Sydney, he gained his Bachelor of Economics from the Univerisity of Sydney in 1931 and joined the staff of Newcastle Boys' High School in 1937. Hodge enlisted in the Second A.I.F. in 1941 and was subsequently commissioned in the Royal Australia Airforce. He returned to Newcastle Boys' High School on discharge in 1946. Hodge retired as Headmaster of Raymond Terrace High School in 1966 and continued to live in Newcastle.but spent several months each year in Hill End continuing his research into the history of the Hill End and Tambaroora goldfields, his lifelong passion. 'The Hill End Story' in three volumes was first published in 1964. The second edition appeared in 1973, and the third edition, revised by his son, Errol, in 1980. Hodge also wrote two novels, 'Death in the Morning' and 'Mesa Gold', a children's book, 'Warrumbungle the Wallaby' and 'A Guide to Historic Hill End'. He was awarded an MBE in 1971 for valuable contributions to historical research, notably in the Hill End district". Hodge died on 28 January 1873, survived by his widow, son and daughter.
