  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Anna Josepha King (1765-1844), wife of Governor Philip Gidley King (1758-1808), was granted 790 acres of land at South Creek (St Marys, New South Wales) by Governor William Bligh in January 1807. The land, sometimes referred to as 'Thanks' farm, is referred to in the stock account books as 'Mrs King's farm' and was later known as 'Dunhevid'. The original livestock on Mrs King's farm came from the government flock at Cowpastures. Philip and Anna King left Sydney for England in 1807 where Philip Gidley King died in 1807. In Mrs King's absence the farm was managed by Rowland Hassall until his death in 1820. Anna Josepha King returned to Sydney in 1832 and lived with her daughter Maria Macarthur, wife of Hannibal Macarthur, at 'The Vineyard', Parramatta, where she died in 1844.
