  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Rowland Hassall fled Tahiti for Sydney aboard the 'Nautilus' in 1798, along with his wife Elizabeth and sons Thomas, Samuel, and Jonathan. On their arrival at Port Jackson the family first lived at Parramatta in a house owned by lay preacher George Barrington, a reformed pickpocket. Hassall was granted 100 acres of land at Dundas and established a flock of merino sheep with sheep from the flocks of Samuel Marsden and George Barrington. On Samuel Marsden's recommendation, Governor King appointed Hassall as superintendent of convicts and government storekeeper at Parramatta and Toongabbie in 1800. The appointment was terminated in 1802 due to Hassall's inability to detect forged signatures. Around that time Hassall opened a store at Parramatta stocked with a diverse range of goods. Hassall's fair prices are said to have helped break the monopoly of extortionists in the Colony. Hassall's Parramatta store also provided a valuable service to missionaries who remained in Tahiti by supplying them with much needed goods.
