In 1911, aged 16, he was one of a group of Fort Street Boys' High School cadets who were members of the Australian Commonwealth Coronation Contingent of New South Wales Cadets attending the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. In 1917 Tunks graduated from the University of Sydney in Medicine, and in April 1918 was commissioned as Captain in the Army Medical Corps, A.I.F. He travelled to Europe in 1918 on the troopship 'Borda', and returned after the cessation of hostilities on the troopship 'Berrima' in 1919. In 1920 he set up medical practice in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, and in 1935 travelled to England where he later became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. After returning to Australia Tunks established a medical practice around Coogee and Randwick, and in Macquarie Street, Sydney. His wife was May Tunks nee Collins, (1894-1985).
