  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Anna Maria was the eldest daughter of Governor Philip Gidley King. She married Hannibal Hawkins Macarthur in 1812 and the couple settled at Vineyard, Parramatta, which became one of the leading houses of the colony. After the financial collapse of her husband in the late 1840s, the couple moved to Ipswich, where Anna died in 1852.

  • General note

Shows Anna Macarthur at the height of her social position, and just before financial troubles overwhelmed her husband. It was painted in the same year as Nicholas' somewhat grander portrait of her mother Anna Josepha King (Location Number: ML 1192), who was then also living at Vineyard. Nicholas seems to have been the favoured local portrait artist of the Macarthur and King families -- Curator of Pictures, Mitchell Library, 2002.
