  This report, to the Commanding Officer, H.M.A.S. Sydney, was written by Leonard Darby, the ship's surgeon, after its engagement with the German cruiser, S.M.S. Emden off the Cocos Islands. Darby describes the wounds sustained by the Australian sailors and the operations he performed below decks under very difficult, overcrowded conditions.
