  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Queen Victoria Club, originally called the Women's Liberal League of NSW, was founded in 1901. The name was changed to the Queen Victoria Club in 1907. The purpose of the Club was to foster a spirit of good fellowship between women, assist musical artists and promote the love of good music. To this end, the Club held monthly "musicales" under the patronage of the wife of the Governor of the day. Sybil King was President from 1958 to 1979. She was succeeded by Edna Gibbins, who was President from 1980 to 1995. Beryl Green served as secretary from 1966 to 1995. The Club established two scholarships at the Sydney Eisteddfod, one for piano for entrants 15 years and under, the other for violin for entrants 13 years and older. It also sponsored scholarships at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music: one for violin established in 1965 and one for cello established in 1969. From 1970 to 1994, the Club met in the rooms of the Girls Secondary Schools' Club. When the Queen Victoria Club was dissolved in 1995, the remaining funds of the Club went to the establishment of a piano scholarship at the Conservatorium.
