  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin was born in 1879 at Talbingo near Tumut, NSW. At the age of 20 she wrote an autobiographical novel entitled My brilliant career which was published in Edinburgh in 1901. In 1906 she went to Chicago, USA, where she worked for the National Women's Trade Union League of America, principally as co-editor of its journal, Life and Labour. During this period she wrote another novel, Some everyday folk and dawn, which was published in 1909. During World War I she went to England and subsequently joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service, with which she served in Serbia 1917-18. After the war she worked for several years in London as assistant secretary with the National Housing and Town Planning Council. In 1927 she returned to Australia to live in Sydney, paying visits to England and USA during 1931-32. In 1928 she published Up the country, the first of six novels written under the pseudonym Brent of Bin Bin. In 1936 she won the Prior Memorial Prize for the novel All that swagger. Other publications include Old Blastus of Bandicoot (1931), Pioneers on parade (1939) written in collaboration with Dymphna Cusack, My career goes bung (1946), Sydney Royal (1947) and Laughter not for a cage, a collection of lectures on Australian literature which was published posthumously in 1956. She died in 1954. Under her will a fund was established to award prizes annually for novels "which must present Australian life in any of its phases".
