  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Isaac Nathan (1792-1864) was born in Canterbury, England, and educated at the Cambridge Academy. Well-known as a composer and a friend of Lord Byron, he emigrated to Australia in 1841. He soon became choral director at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. For the next twenty years, Nathan dominated the Australian musical scene as a composer, teacher, organist and conductor, and was the first colonial musician to attempt a serious study of Aboriginal music. His opera Don John of Austria, which he composed in 1846, is believed to be the first opera written and performed in Australia. Nathan's music was published in London and Sydney during his lifetime.
