- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Many of these have survived but few of his miniatures have survived. Source: Curator of Pictures from notes on ML file - Access Conditions

Jane Penelope Atkinson was the daughter of emancipist Mary Reibey. She married merchant John Atkinson in 1824, settled in Wilberforce on one of Mary Reibey's properties and produced 12 children. She died in Tasmania in 1854. Apart from being a portrait of a member of a leading colonial and emancipist family - and in that evidence of the tremendous social mobility of colonial society - this miniature is also a rare and high quality example of colonial miniature painting.
