  Attributed to Wilson by family tradition. Wilson, like Verge, lived in the Macleay River district in the mid-1840s. He was also a well known pastel portrait painter cf. Joan Kerr ed., The Dictionary of Australian Artists, 1992
  
  Portrait was exhibited in Mr John Verge, Elizabeth Bay House, 1978
  
  A pastel companion portrait of the same size of Mary Verge (John Verge's second wife), by the same artist, is at DG 443, Dixson Galleries. This was purchased in 1980 from the same source as John Verge.
