  • General note

In 1881 John Sands organised a competition in which the public was invited to submit designs for Christmas cards, which he intended to publish. Prizes were offered for the winning designs. The designs had to be "Australian in character", so most of these watercolours show either bush landscapes and life, or botanical illustrations. The designs in this collection appear to date from this competition - PXA 648/1 is inscribed on reverse "Designed by J. J. Gibbs 1881"
Press comments about the competition can be found in the Sydney Morning Herald 24 May 1881 p.5 & the Daily Telegraph 23 May 1881 p.3. -- See also Majorie Graham "Collecting Christmas Cards and their origin in the colony", Australasian Antique Collector, Jan/July 1968 p.48-49 : photocopies of these articles are at PXA 648/50-55.
